About Kat

My name is Kat Theophanous and I am honoured to have been elected as the Labor Member for Northcote and as the Parliamentary Secretary for Women’s Health.

I was born and raised in Alphington and am now bringing up my daughters Ariana and Cleo in the inner north with my husband Julian.

The inner north has been home to me for over 35 years and is a deep part of who I am.

Some of my earliest childhood memories are of walking the Darebin Parklands with Mum, attending Northcote Primary School and learning to ride my bike along the Merri Creek with my three older brothers.

I have spent my working life in media and government fighting for social justice, equality, diversity and inclusion.

At SBS I was a part of the Government Relations team that defended our multicultural broadcaster from attacks by the Abbott Government.

Prior to being elected, I worked alongside Fiona Richardson, the previous Labor Member for Northcote and former Minister for Women and Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence.

I was proud to work with Fiona to deliver Victoria’s Royal Commission into Family Violence, secure unprecedented funding for family violence services, and promote social and economic equality for women through Victoria’s first Gender Equality Strategy.

This work continues in my role as Co-Chair of the State Government’s Gender Equality Advisory Committee.

In 2018, this electorate gave me the most precious of gifts; the privilege to represent this community I love so much.

The people of Northcote voted for a Government that get things done and does what’s fair.  And I'm getting on with the business of doing this as part of the Andrews Labor Government.

The inner north is a vibrant mix of creativity and culture, with incredible waterways, parks, sports facilities and bike paths, schools and small businesses. We have access to public transport and amenities that make it a wonderful place to live.

But we are also growing rapidly – and with this comes the challenge of balancing growth with maintaining open space, improving vital infrastructure and planning for more services. It also creates an opportunity to grow jobs and build sustainability into our suburbs.

In my first term of government, I’ve been proud to fight for our schools, our local businesses and workers, our environment, for better health and mental health services, for more open spaces and a great transport system.

You can check out some of my work here.

As your local MP, I’ll always put the interests of our community first. I look forward to working with you to make our community an even better place to live!

“In this climate it is easy to become cynical about politics. But I am not cynical, because I am part of a party that has always fought to make things fairer, not with symbolism but with real reform.”
