Bell Street Bridge Safety Improvements

For many months I have been working with local residents to raise awareness of safety concerns along the Bell Street Bridge between Nicholson and Elizabeth Streets. This includes raising the issues in Parliament and heading down to meet directly with residents.

Thanks to this combined effort, the Andrews Labor Government is completing pedestrian safety treatments on Bell Street bridge in Coburg.

These measures will help make Bell Street, between Nicholson and Elizabeth streets, safer for pedestrians by encouraging drivers to slow down and take care when travelling over the bridge.

What is happening?

To improve pedestrian safety, The Victorian Government is introducing traffic calming treatments on Bell Street bridge in Coburg. These treatments will provide a safer, more enjoyable, and less stressful environment for all road users.

We are installing new line marking (dragons’ teeth shaped markings and SLOW DOWN line markings) along Bell Street between Nicholson Street and Elizabeth Street.

The dragons’ teeth line marking provides visual cues to drivers to encourage reduced speeds and traffic lanes appear narrower, making drivers travel in the centre of their lanes, away from the footpaths.

We are also installing new pedestrian warning signage on the approach to the Bell Street bridge.

When are improvements being implemented?

Crews will be on site from the week commencing 28 February to late March 2022.

We will be working during the night from when traffic volumes are at their lowest.

The pedestrian warning signage will be installed during the day and there will be no disruption to traffic.

Please note that the dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.

When we’re working there may be some delay when travelling through the area, please allow an extra 5 minutes travel time and follow traffic management signage.

How will works impact the community?

During working hours, you may notice:

  • Periodic lane closures of Bell Street on the bridge during the night when we’re completing the line marking.

  • A reduced speed of 40km/h during line marking to ensure the safety of crews, motorists, and pedestrians.

  • Low to medium levels of noise during the night when we’re completing the line marking.

  • Temporary lighting will be used when we’re working at night.

  • A 5-minute delay when moving through the area. Please plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

Traffic management crews will be on site to help you move through the area while we complete the line marking.

Thank you for your patience while we complete these important safety improvements.
