Hi, I’m Kat Theophanous - the Labor Member of Parliament for Northcote in the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
One of the great things about living in our suburbs is the availability and accessibility of public transport, including the two train lines running through our community.
However, for the many locals who live along and near our rail corridors, noise from train horns is a significant challenge - one that’s having an impact on people’s lives.
An incredible transformation of our rail network is currently underway to remove level crossings across our suburbs. This will not only improve safety and address congestion, but will also mean train horns are used less along these section of the track.
But I know for many, train horn noise will be an ongoing issue for some time. One that has been exacerbated over the pandemic as we spend more time at home.
That is why I have been working to raise the issue of train horn noise within the Victorian Parliament, with the Minister for Roads and with the Department of Transport.
You can read my speech in the Victorian Parliament here.
I’m pushing for the Department of Transport to investigate options for reducing both the volume and frequency of train horns in our local suburbs.
Will you help me send a strong message about our community concerns?
As I continue to advocate for measures to reduce train horn noise, I am keen to hear your experience, feedback and support for action on this issue.
