With war in the Middle East driving up costs at home, more train services help Victorians save money and time.
Investing in new trains also supports more services on the network and more space at peak times.
More new trains
The Victorian Budget 2026/27 invests $673.6 million to deliver 25 locally built X’Trapolis 2.0 trains.
These new trains are bigger and better, more comfortable and more efficient – carrying around 1,225 passengers.
The investment also supports 750 jobs across Victoria.
In total, 50 X'Trapolis 2.0 trains have been funded by the Allan Labor Government.
The first 25 are set to roll out on the Cragieburn, Upfield and Frankston lines in the coming months.
More train services
Labor has added 3,500 train services to the network and now we’re delivering more.
The Budgetinvests $77.5 million to deliver:
Shepparton line:
nine return services every weekday – almost double the number of current services
Belgrave and Lilydale lines:
trains every 20 mins to the end of the line on weekday evenings – up from every 30 mins
trains every 10 mins on the Ringwood corridor on weekday evenings – up from every 15 mins
Glen Waverley and Alamein lines:
trains every 20 mins on weekday evenings – up from every 30 mins
Mernda and Hurstbridge lines:
trains every 20 mins to Mernda and Eltham all weekend – up from every 30 mins in the evening and every 40 mins on Sunday morning
services every 10 mins between the city and Clifton Hill – up from every 15 mins on weekend evenings and every 20 mins on Sunday mornings into the city
These new services meet growing demand for evening and weekend services. Time ranges listed are averages.
Thanks to our investments, even more additional services are ready to hit the network in the coming months:
Werribee line: two additional trains per hour in the mornings and afternoons
Sandringham line: trains every 10 minutes between peak periods
Craigieburn line: trains at least every 20 minutes on the line, including late at night and on weekends
Upfield line: trains at least every 20 minutes on the line, including late at night and on weekends
Seymour line: trains every hour between 8:00am and 9:00pm on weekends
Shepparton line: five return services on Saturday and Sunday
This is on top of more services now running on the Gippsland Line – with trains now running every 40 minutes.
We’re also slashing the cost of public transport, with free travel now and half-price fares from June 1.
Half-price PT saves the regular daily commuter more than $850 and keeps a lid on fuel demand for everyone else.
Labor will always invest in our transport system to save people time and keep people moving.
Labor will always invest in our manufacturing industry to support local jobs in regional Victoria.
Only Labor has new solutions to make life easier, safer and more affordable.
