Yarralea Street in Alphington is set to have a new school crossing installed to improve safety for students, families and local residents.
Member for Northcote Kat Theophanous MP today announced $150,000 from the Victorian Government to deliver the project as part of Labor’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.
She joined local Yarra Councillor Sarah McKenzie and Alphington Primary Principal Shane Wilkie to share the news. The project will be delivered in partnership with Yarra City Council.
The new raised crossing will be immediately south of the laneway that the school community use to access Alphington Park.
This will provide greater alignment with pedestrian desire lines, accommodate people wishing to walk both north and south of crossing, and better align with the new entrance that was created when the school underwent a major capital upgrade in 2022.
The funding is part of the Victorian Labor Government’s investment in road safety upgrades right across the state, working with councils to deliver projects including pedestrian crossings, intersection upgrades and traffic calming measures.
More than 430 projects have now been approved across Victoria, with all 79 councils participating in the program.
Local roads make up 87 per cent of Victoria’s road network and are used by communities every day to get to school, work and local shops.
The program is helping councils deliver practical upgrades that reduce the risk of crashes and improve safety for all road users.
The Safe Local Roads and Streets Program is part of Victoria’s Road Safety Strategy.
The strategy aims to halve road deaths by 2030 and eliminate road deaths by 2050.
The program was developed by the Transport Accident Commission in partnership with the Department of Transport and Planning.
