Hi, I’m Kat Theophanous - the Labor Member of Parliament for Northcote in the Victorian Legislative Assembly.

Boost for Henderson Park in Thornbury

Victorian families are set to benefit from new and improved green spaces, with the Allan Labor Government investing in local parks and playgrounds to make life easier and more affordable for families in the inner north.

Minister for Development Victoria and Precincts Harriet Shing recently announced $17 million towards the first round of the Pick My Park program, delivering new and upgraded parks in priority precincts and Train and Tram Activity Centres.

As part of this investment, Henderson Park in Thornbury will receive a $249,200 state contribution towards a major upgrade, alongside another $249,400 from Darebin City Council.

The project will deliver new barbecues and picnic areas, a new shelter with picnic tables and BBQ facilities, renewed park infrastructure, and expanded planting and landscaping.

These improvements will enhance amenity and create a more vibrant and welcoming space for community gatherings, recreation and relaxation – including for the many students who frequent the park from Thornbury Primary School.

More than 2,000 Victorians shared ideas for local parks and playgrounds, with the Victorian Government working alongside councils and land managers to bring these projects to life.

Pick My Park proposals were initially designed to go out for community voting, however the government received high-quality applications and were able to accommodate all eligible projects within the existing funding amount.

The Pick My Park program is focused on delivering more open space in areas experiencing housing growth and increased density, ensuring families have access to great outdoor spaces close to home.

By 2051, train and tram zones will help deliver more than 300,000 new homes – with final plans for all 50 new centres expected to be completed by the middle of this year.

Only Labor will deliver the homes and green spaces Victorian families deserve.
