NEW MODERN FACILITIES AT THORNBURY HIGH TO OPEN UP PATHWAYS

Thornbury High School is set to receive $14.9 million to build a brand new STEAM Centre as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s pandemic recovery budget.

The announcement was made by the Premier Dan Andrews with Minister for Education, James Merlino and local Member for Northcote, Kat Theophanous.

The Andrews Labor Government has built and upgraded more schools than any government in our state’s history, and the Victorian Budget 2020/21 continues that record of investment.

The $14.9 million upgrade will deliver Stage 2 of Thornbury High’s Masterplan. The STEAM centre will encourage excellence for students in science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.

The school already has a strong record of achievement in STEAM learning, delivering an introduction to robotics and engineering for Year 7 students. Thornbury High is also one of just 13 schools in Victoria with a NexStar Evolution telescope, and runs overseas trips to NASA headquarters in Florida to expand student’s learning.

This investment builds on the $5.3 million the school received from the Andrews Government to deliver Stage 1 of the Masterplan, completed earlier in the year with a brand new competition grade gymnasium, auditorium and creative spaces.

Other schools across the Electorate of Northcote have also received funding in the 2020/21 State Budget, including a $7.2 million upgrade to Bell Primary School and $7.9 million to upgrade Croxton Special School.

The Government’s investment will also support local jobs, with the school infrastructure build set to create more than 6,400 jobs across the state.
