Hi, I’m Kat Theophanous - the Labor Member of Parliament for Northcote in the Victorian Legislative Assembly.

CAPITAL WORKS WIN FOR WESTGARTH PRIMARY

CAPITAL WORKS WIN FOR WESTGARTH PRIMARY

Westgarth Primary School will undergo extensive roof replacement works to end the disruption to classes and give kids access to the classrooms they deserve.

Member for Northcote, Kat Theophanous today announced Westgarth Primary has been awarded $450,165 as part of a fund to fast-track priority school projects, supporting local jobs through Victoria’s economic recovery.

The funds will be delivered through the Andrews Labor Government’s $70 million Minor Capital Works Fund for important upgrades across Victoria.

The Member for Northcote went in to bat for the school, writing directly to the Education Minister, raising the school in Parliament and working with the department to ensure the critical situation was well understood and appreciated.

With the $150,000 in emergency maintenance funding already secured for the school earlier in the year, this brings the total funding to over $600,000.

The roof replacement works will make a big difference to the school community, who have been grappling with leaks at the Brooke Street campus.

The works will commence in early 2021 and will be led by the Victorian School Building Authority.

The project adds to the three other schools in the Northcote Electorate that have received funding in the recently announced budget.

Last month, the Labor Government invested more than $3 billion in school upgrades through the Victorian Budget 2020/21.

The 2020 school year has been like no other but the announcement of significant funding across many of the schools in the Northcote Electorate will make the future for students brighter and provide an economic boost to our suburbs.

Quotes attributable to Kat Theophanous, Labor Member for Northcote

“I’ve worked hard with Principal Jo Wheeler to make the case for Westgarth Primary to access these very important funds. I know exactly how critical these roof works are to the day to day running of the school.”

“Today’s announcement is the culmination of many months of work and we are excited about what the future holds for Westgarth Primary as we continue to collaborate to build a compelling case for additional investment in the school.”
